Baccarat is a card game in which you bet on which of two hands, Player or Banker, will finish closer to nine, or on a tie. Once the bet is placed, there are no decisions left to make.
Aces count as one, two to nine at face value, and tens and picture cards as zero. When a total goes above nine, only the last digit counts, so a nine and a seven make six1. If either hand has eight or nine from its first two cards, called a natural, both hands stand. Otherwise fixed third-card rules apply, beginning with the Player hand drawing on a total of five or less1.
Those drawing rules favour the Banker hand slightly, which is why Banker wins are normally paid at 19 to 20, equivalent to even money less 5% commission1. In an eight-deck game, the mathematical house edge is 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player, and 14.36% on a Tie paid at 8 to 11.
A tie happens rarely enough that an 8 to 1 payout falls well short of its true odds, which explains the gap. Tables that remove or reduce the commission change the Banker payout, and with it the edge, so the paytable matters more than the name of the variant.

Why is commission charged on Banker bets?
The fixed drawing rules give the Banker hand a small advantage, so paying Banker wins at full even money would tip the game towards the player. Standard tables pay Banker wins at 19 to 20, the equivalent of even money less 5% commission, which leaves a house edge of 1.06% in an eight-deck game.
Why is the Tie bet's house edge so high?
A tie is uncommon, and the usual 8 to 1 payout is well below what its probability would justify. Wizard of Odds calculates the house edge on the Tie bet at 14.36% in an eight-deck game, against 1.06% on Banker and 1.24% on Player. The figure applies to that payout; a table paying a different rate on ties has a different edge.
Do I make any decisions in baccarat?
Only which bet to place and how much to stake. Whether either hand draws a third card is decided by fixed rules. For example, the Player hand draws on a total of five or less and stands on six or seven, and both hands stand if either has a natural eight or nine. Nothing you do after betting affects the outcome.
What is a natural in baccarat?
A natural is a two-card total of eight or nine. If either the Player or Banker hand has one, both hands stand and no further cards are drawn. A natural nine beats a natural eight, and two naturals of the same value are a tie.
