This category covers banked casino games beyond the three best-known tables: poker-based games played against the house, dice games such as craps and sic bo, and simple card games like Casino War. In each, you play against the dealer's hand or a paytable, not against other players.

Every bet has its own house edge, set by its probabilities and payouts. Wizard of Odds defines house edge as the ratio of the average loss to the initial bet, assuming optimal or near-optimal strategy where a game involves decisions. Its published figures include the following1.

Game and bet House edge
Craps, Pass line 1.41%
Pai Gow Poker 1.46%
Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em, ante 2.19%
Casino War, go to war 2.88%
Three Card Poker, Ante and Play 3.37%
Let It Ride 3.51%
Caribbean Stud Poker 5.22%
Three Card Poker, Pair Plus 7.28%
Sic bo 2.78% to 33.33%, by bet

Side bets can cost far more than the main wager. Pair Plus carries more than double the edge of Three Card Poker's main bet, and Casino War's bet on a tie carries 18.65%1.

These numbers are mathematical and apply to the paytables they were calculated for. Individual games can use different paytables, so the rules of the specific version decide the real figure.

FAQ

About table games

What is a banked game?

In a banked game, every player bets against the house, which pays winning bets and collects losing ones. Blackjack, roulette and the games in this category all work this way. Poker in a card room is different: players compete against each other, and the house charges a fee instead of acting as the opponent.

Why does the house edge vary between bets in the same game?

Each bet has its own chance of winning and its own payout, and the house edge reflects the gap between the two. In Three Card Poker, for example, the Ante and Play wager carries a house edge of 3.37%, while the optional Pair Plus bet carries 7.28%. Choosing a bet is, in effect, choosing a price.

Do these house edge figures assume perfect play?

Where a game involves decisions, yes. Wizard of Odds calculates its figures on the basis of optimal or near-optimal strategy. Playing hands differently, for example folding or raising at the wrong times in a poker-based game, increases the edge. In games with no decisions, such as sic bo, the figure depends only on which bet is chosen.

Are digital and live versions of table games the same?

They follow the same rules, so where the rules and paytable match, the mathematical house edge is the same. The differences are in how results are produced, by a random number generator or by physical cards and dice, and in the pace of play. Side bet paytables can differ between versions, so check the rules of the specific game.
