How casino bonuses and their terms work

Educational explainers on bonus types and the conditions attached to them. We publish no offers, codes or promotions.

In short

A casino bonus is a promotion with conditions attached, and the conditions decide what it is really worth. Common terms include wagering requirements, time limits, maximum stake sizes and game restrictions. KiraBet explains how each bonus type and term works so readers can understand them. We do not publish offers, bonus codes or links to operators.

Why the terms matter more than the headline

A bonus headline shows an amount. The terms decide whether, when and how any of it can be withdrawn.

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority describes significant conditions as key restrictions such as who is excluded, time limits, how to qualify, maximum stake size and wagering requirements1. It also highlights that some games may not qualify for a bonus or may contribute differently to wagering1.

Bonus types we explain

  • Welcome bonus – promotions linked to opening an account
  • Deposit bonus – bonus funds calculated from a deposit
  • Free spins – spins on specified slots, and the conditions on any winnings
  • Cashback – a return of part of losses over a set period
  • No deposit bonus – promotions that do not require a deposit, and their restrictions

Rules differ by country

Regulators set different limits. In Great Britain, wagering requirements have been capped at a maximum of 10 times the bonus since 19 January 20262, and the Gambling Commission's guidance says players must be allowed to withdraw their deposit balance even when a bonus is active3.

Those rules apply only to businesses licensed there. They do not describe the position anywhere else. For the Maldives, see the legal position on casinos in the Maldives.

How to use this section

Each page explains what the bonus type is, how it typically works and what to check in the terms. Any figures in examples are hypothetical.

Start with our guide to wagering requirements. A bonus never changes the house edge of the games it is used on, and gambling always involves financial risk.

FAQ

Questions about this section

Does KiraBet list casino bonus offers?

No. We publish educational explainers about how bonus types and their terms work, so readers can understand the conditions attached. We do not publish offers, bonus codes or links to operators, and any figures in our examples are clearly labelled as hypothetical.

What should I look for in bonus terms?

Look for the conditions that decide whether funds can ever be withdrawn: wagering requirements, time limits, maximum stake size, which games count and by how much, and who is excluded. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority describes these as significant conditions of a promotion.

Is a bonus free money?

No. Bonus funds usually come with conditions that must be met before anything can be withdrawn, and meeting them involves further gambling with its usual risk of loss. A bonus does not change the house edge of the games played.
