Roulette is a wheel game in which a ball settles into one numbered pocket, and every bet on that number, colour or group of numbers is paid at a fixed rate. There are no decisions once the wheel is spinning, so the house edge depends only on the wheel and the rules.
European roulette has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero. American roulette adds a double zero, making 381. A straight-up bet on one number pays 35 to 1 on both wheels1, so the extra pocket changes the maths.
On a single-zero wheel the house edge is 1/37, or 2.70%, on every bet. On a double-zero wheel it is 1/19, or 5.26%, except for the five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, which carries 7.89%1. Triple-zero wheels, where offered, carry 7.69%1.
French rules can lower the edge on even-money bets. Under la partage, half of an even-money stake is returned when zero wins1, which halves the edge on those bets to 1.35%.

Which version of roulette has the lowest house edge?
On most bets, single-zero roulette has a mathematical house edge of 2.70%, compared with 5.26% on a double-zero wheel. French rules with la partage go further on even-money bets, returning half the stake when zero wins, which lowers the edge on those bets to 1.35%. Do betting systems such as the Martingale work?
No system changes the house edge. On a given wheel every bet carries the same edge, apart from the five-number bet on double-zero wheels, which is worse. Progressions such as the Martingale only change how much you stake after a win or loss. They tend to produce runs of small wins interrupted by large losses, and they run into table limits and the money available.
What is the five-number bet?
On American double-zero wheels, the five-number bet covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. It carries a house edge of 7.89%, higher than the 5.26% on every other bet on the same wheel. Single-zero wheels have no equivalent, because there is no double zero to include.
If a number has not come up for a while, is it more likely to appear?
No. Each spin is independent of the last, whether the wheel is physical or simulated by a random number generator. Expecting a number to be "due" is known as the gambler's fallacy. Recent-results displays show what has already happened, not what will happen next.
