Slots with free spins rounds

The bonus round built into the game, not the promotion attached to an account. How triggers, retriggers and in-round modifiers work.

In short

A free spins round is a feature inside the game: a set number of spins, awarded by a trigger such as scatter symbols, played without deducting a further stake and usually with a modifier applied. Its return is already counted inside the game's published return to player. This is a different thing from promotional free spins credited by an operator, which carry bonus terms and wagering conditions.

Two things share one name

The phrase covers two unrelated ideas. One is a feature inside a slot, triggered by the game itself. The other is a promotion an operator credits to an account, governed by bonus terms. This page is about the first; the second is covered in our explanation of how free spins offers work and in our guide to bonus wagering.

How the round is triggered

Most games use scatter symbols, which pay or trigger regardless of position, and set both a minimum number and sometimes a location. NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest awards its Free Fall round when three scatter symbols land on the first three reels, granting 10 free spins1.

The number of spins awarded is usually scaled to the number of triggering symbols, and many games allow a retrigger, where landing the trigger again during the round adds further spins1.

What changes inside the round

The round is rarely just free base-game spins. Typical modifiers include a raised multiplier ceiling, symbols that stick in place, reels that expand, or an altered symbol set. In Gonzo's Quest, the multiplier ladder that peaks at 5x in the base game rises to 15x during Free Fall1.

This is where a large share of a game's payout potential usually sits, which is why a slot can feel flat between rounds.

The round is inside the RTP, not on top of it

The theoretical return to player is the percentage built into the game's mathematics and confirmed through simulation and testing2. The free spins round is part of that calculation, not an extra. Removing it would not leave the same base game with a lower return; the base game is already built around the assumption that the round pays a defined share of the total.

In Great Britain, an explanation of the rules must be easily available before a customer commits to gamble, together with the house edge, the return to player percentage, or the probability of winning events occurring3.

What to check in the rules panel

  • The trigger: how many scatters, and whether their position matters.
  • How many spins each trigger combination awards, and whether retriggers are possible or capped.
  • What is different during the round: multipliers, sticky symbols, expanded reels, a changed symbol set.
  • Whether the round can be bought, and whether that purchase is available in your market.

How our database records it

We tag a game with the free spins mechanic when the provider describes a free spins, free fall or free games round in the title's own rules or game page. Spin counts and multiplier limits are recorded as the provider states them. Where a provider does not publish the detail, we leave it out rather than describe a round we have not verified.

FAQ

About free spins slots

Are in-game free spins really free?

They are played without deducting a further stake, but they are not a gift. The round's contribution is part of the return to player the game was designed around, which is the percentage built into the mathematics and confirmed by testing. In effect, the base game costs slightly more per spin so that the free round can pay what it pays.

How are free spins rounds triggered?

Usually by scatter symbols, in a number and sometimes a position set by the game. Gonzo's Quest awards 10 free spins when three scatters land on the first three reels. Other games use collection meters, bonus symbols on specific reels, or a random trigger. The rules panel states the condition, and in Great Britain that explanation must be available before you commit to gamble.

What is the difference between these and a casino's free spins offer?

An in-game round comes from the slot itself and is part of its published return. Promotional free spins are credited by an operator, are attached to a specific game and stake, and normally carry wagering requirements and expiry rules. Our explanation of how free spins offers work covers the terms involved, and our guide to bonus wagering covers the arithmetic.

Why do free spins rounds often include multipliers?

Because the round is where most games concentrate their payout potential, and multipliers are the simplest way to extend the range of outcomes. Gonzo's Quest raises its multiplier ceiling from 5x in the base game to 15x during Free Fall. The extra reach is paid for elsewhere in the maths, not added to the game's overall return.
