Payments

Payment methods explained

Neutral explainers on how common payment methods work and the trade-offs each involves.

In short

The KiraBet payments section explains how cards, bank transfers, e-wallets and cryptocurrencies work, and how they differ in fees, reversibility, privacy and security. It is educational: it does not explain how to pay a gambling operator, recommend a method for gambling or help anyone get around payment restrictions in any country.

Methods we explain

What each page covers

Every method page follows the same structure, so methods can be compared fairly:

Question Why it matters
How does the payment move? Who processes it and how long it takes
What fees can apply? Which fees exist and who charges them
Can it be reversed? Whether a payment can be disputed or recalled after it is sent
What personal data is shared? What the recipient and intermediaries learn about you
What are the security risks? Fraud, scams and account takeover

Payments and gambling rules

Regulators often treat payment methods as a consumer-protection issue. In Great Britain, for example, gambling businesses have been banned from allowing consumers to gamble using credit cards since 14 April 20201.

Licensed online gambling businesses in Great Britain must also check a customer's age and identity before they gamble, and delaying a withdrawal to collect identification that should have been requested earlier may breach the rules2.

These examples show how rules differ by country. They say nothing about what is allowed where you live. For the Maldives, see the proposed gambling offence in the Maldives.

What this section does not do

We do not explain how to deposit with or withdraw from a gambling operator, and we never describe ways to get around banking or payment restrictions.

Currency conversion and cross-border card fees

A conversion can happen in three different places, and the cost depends on which one does it. European disclosure rules exist to make those offers comparable.

Most payout delays happen before the money ever reaches a payment network. Knowing which party holds it at each step tells you who can actually move it.

FAQ

Questions about this section

Does this section explain how to pay at an online casino?

No. The payments section explains how payment methods work in general and the trade-offs between them, such as fees, reversibility and privacy. It does not explain how to pay a gambling operator or how to get around payment restrictions in any country.

Why do some regulators restrict payment methods for gambling?

Payment rules are one tool regulators use to protect consumers. In Great Britain, for example, gambling businesses have not been allowed to let consumers gamble using credit cards since 14 April 2020, following a Gambling Commission decision covering online and offline gambling except non-remote lotteries.

Are cryptocurrency payments reversible?

Our cryptocurrency pages explain how transactions are confirmed on each network and what that means for disputes, mistakes and fraud. Reversibility is one of the key trade-offs we compare across every payment method, alongside fees, privacy and security, so readers can compare methods on equal terms.
