Low-volatility games pay smaller wins more often; high-volatility games pay larger wins less often, with longer runs of losing spins in between. Regulators commonly represent volatility with the statistical standard deviation. Volatility is separate from RTP: two games can share a 96% RTP and behave very differently.

What volatility means
Volatility, sometimes called variance, describes how spread out a game's results are. It answers a different question from RTP: not "how much does this game return?" but "how is that return delivered?"
The Gambling Commission in Great Britain notes that the standard deviation of a game is most commonly used to represent its volatility. High-volatility games feature rare, large prizes, while low-volatility games offer frequent, smaller wins1.
Volatility is not the same as RTP
RTP focuses on how much a slot is built to return over the long run. Volatility is about win patterns: how often payouts appear and how large they can be2.
Both are properties of the game's maths. Neither can be judged from a short session, because RTP is an average achieved over a significant number of plays3.
Worked example (hypothetical): same RTP, different volatility
The two games below are invented and deliberately simplified. Each has a 96% RTP, and the figures are calculated directly from the rules given.
- Game A: each £1 spin has a 48% chance of paying £2, otherwise nothing.
- Game B: each £1 spin has a 0.96% chance of paying £100, otherwise nothing.

Both games cost the same on average: £4 for every £100 staked. The experience is not remotely similar.
In Game A, a player's balance drifts slowly. In Game B, more than a third of 100-spin sessions produce no win at all, while a single hit returns 100 times the stake. That wider spread is what higher volatility means.
How the figures were calculated
- The chance of no win in 100 spins is the chance of losing one spin, raised to the power of 100. For Game B, 0.9904 to the power of 100 is about 0.38.
- Standard deviation measures the typical distance of a result from the average. For Game B, it is the square root of (0.0096 × 100²) − 0.96², which is about 9.75 stakes.
How providers describe volatility
Players rarely see a standard deviation figure. Providers usually publish their own rating instead, as a word or a score.
Hacksaw Gaming, for instance, shows a volatility score of 4 out of 5 on its page for Wanted Dead or a Wild4.
Because each provider sets its own scale, KiraBet does not assume that a rating from one studio means exactly the same as the same word from another. In our game database, volatility is recorded only when the provider publishes a rating, and we map it to a common label while keeping the provider's original wording.
Hit frequency and maximum win
Two other published figures help explain volatility, though neither replaces it.
Hit frequency
Hit frequency is the rate at which spins produce any win. It is a separate statistic from RTP and should not be confused with it2.
A high hit frequency does not guarantee low volatility. If a game's smaller prizes pay less than the stake, a "win" can still leave the balance lower than before the spin.
Maximum win
Maximum win is the largest payout the game can produce, usually expressed as a multiple of the stake. Wanted Dead or a Wild, for example, lists a maximum win of 12,500x4.
There is a simple reason large maximum wins tend to come with higher volatility. With RTP fixed, every pound set aside for rare, very large payouts is a pound not paid out as frequent, smaller wins. The maximum win itself is extremely unlikely to be reached in any given session.
Why volatility matters in short sessions
The Commission's guidance to operators explains that a game's volatility determines how far its actual RTP can reasonably stray from the theoretical figure, and that measuring a game over only a small amount of play produces results too uncertain to be meaningful5.
The same principle applies to an individual player, only more so. The higher the volatility, the wider the range of outcomes in any session of realistic length, and the more likely a long sequence of losing spins becomes.
What volatility means for risk
It is tempting to think of volatility as a style choice. It is better understood as a description of how quickly a budget can move in either direction.

The final row is the one that matters most. Neither lower nor higher volatility changes the average cost of play, and no volatility level makes a game beatable.
Common misunderstandings
- "A high-volatility game is due a big win after a long losing run." The published rating describes the game's overall pattern. It does not track your session or make a win more likely because the last spins lost.
- "Low volatility means low risk." Lower volatility narrows the swings, but the average cost per £100 staked is still set by RTP. Playing for longer increases the total staked and the expected loss.
- "A bigger maximum win makes a game better value." A larger top prize does not mean more is returned overall. With RTP fixed, the total return is the same however it is divided between small and large wins.
